Our Club

140+ Years of Swimming Excellence in Reading

Founded in 1884, Reading Swimming Club (RSC) is one of the oldest and most respected swimming clubs in the United Kingdom. From our beginnings at King’s Meadow open-air pools to our current base at the state-of-the-art Rivermead Leisure Centre, our club has grown into a vibrant, inclusive community supporting swimmers of all ages and abilities.

We are a volunteer-led, non-profit organizationwith a mission that goes beyond performance — placing people, passion, and purpose at the heart of everything we do.

Our History

For over 140 years, RSC has built a legacy of developing swimmers, fostering community spirit, and promoting a lifelong love for aquatic sports. What started as a group of enthusiastic locals has evolved into a club that now supports hundreds of members across Learn to Swim, Development, Competitive Swimming, Masters,

1884 – RSC is founded, training at the open-air pools at King’s Meadow in East Reading.

1912 – Moves to Arthur Hill Memorial Baths, a new modern facility at the time.

1967 – Transitions to Reading Central Pool, expanding year-round training and competition.

2018 – Diversifies training across multiple top-tier venues in Reading and surrounding areas.

2024 – A new chapter begins with our permanent short-course home at the new Rivermead Leisure Centre.

Through every era, our commitment has remained the same: to nurture talent, build confidence, and provide a platform for all swimmers to thrive — whether they’re learning their first strokes or racing at national level.

Pioneers in Community and Competitive Sport

RSC has a long and proud tradition of developing swimmers who have succeeded at county, regional, and national levels, while staying true to our grassroots — ensuring swimming is accessible to everyone.

Our thriving Learn to Swim programme introduces children to water safety and technique. Our Masters section provides adults with opportunities to stay active and competitive, and our Water Polo team (based in Eton) adds another exciting strand to our aquatic offering

Led by Passion, Driven by Community

RSC is proudly run by volunteers — from coaches and officials to committee members and parent helpers. Our strength comes from the people who give their time, energy, and expertise to help every swimmer be their best.
